Community Safety

Fire and Police Departments are vital to maintaining the safety of our community. Alternatives to policing and diversion programs are just as vital.

Because our police work for us, the community, it is simple common sense that community members deserve to be able to provide direct feedback on how they can best serve us. I therefore supported establishing a community advisory council that is working effectively to provide this necessary service to our Police Department.

As an elected official, I am proud of Bothell's collaboration with Kenmore, Kirkland, Lake Forest Park, and Shoreline in establishing the Regional Crisis Response (RCR) Agency. This initiative exemplifies our commitment to compassionate, effective solutions for individuals experiencing behavioral health crises. By deploying mental health professionals to respond to crises, we prioritize de-escalation and appropriate care over traditional law enforcement interventions. This partnership underscores our dedication to regional cooperation, enhancing public safety, and ensuring that all community members receive the support they need during critical times.

I believe that people deserve a second chance. I was an early supporter of community court for low-level and non-violent crimes. I believe it is important for us to continue investing in these alternatives.

I also fully oppose funding and acquisition of privacy-invading surveillance tools such as drones, password hacking software, and license plate readers, which are traditionally used disproportionately against people of color and religious minorities, until proper justification is provided.
